About Woodley

Woodley Basketball Club was established back in the late 70's. At that time, we only had one team, the game was not as popular and structured as it is today, but there was still a fervent interest in the sport. Today, Woodley Basketball Club plays in the Wessex League (Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey and Wiltshire). Last season we had 70+ members at the club and ran five teams (Men’s teams in Division 1, 2 and 3; with a ladies team in Ladies Division 2).

Very recent accolades include:
  • Men Div 2 League Champions – 2011/12 and Playoff Champions 2013/14 and 2015/16
  • Ladies Div 2 Champions – 2010/11
  • All our teams making the playoffs the last 3 years

Where and when do we play?

We play all our home games at Bulmershe Sport Centre, Woodlands Avenue, Reading RG5 3EU on Sundays between 17:30-21:00 and Mondays-Thursdays between 20:30-10:00pm depending on which team you play for. You will ordinarily get at least one game a week be it home or away. The Wessex Basketball season runs very similar to the British football season, from mid-September to late April. All games are played under the FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball or International Basketball Federation) ruling and are organised through England Basketball and the Wessex League. You will also have a team manager to look after your team’s affairs.

Club structure and Finance

We are a self-financed, Non-profit sport club; all members contribute a monthly subscription of £35 per month (£25 for full time Students) to maintain the club activities. Like many sport clubs, we have a committee who oversee the club affairs, and all subscription funds are very carefully handled by our club treasurer. Most of our expenses comprise of court hire, referees' fees and training sessions. All committee members are volunteers to the club.

Ethics

Woodley Basketball Club members are mainly adults. We employ an all-inclusive approach with respect for one another, ensuring that everyone feels welcome. We enjoy playing basketball to win and at the same time getting together for social gatherings. Many have forged lasting friendships with the very diverse setup that we have. From Venezuela to Kenya to Australia we are represented by rich cultural diversity. As one of our long standing Chief Secretaries used to say 'We play hard, and we play hard too'. Check out our Facebook page for a glimpse of how we’ve grown into a family.

Other basketball activities

Apart from the Wessex league and cup games, the club also gets involved in other tournaments and friendlies: Woodley Birthday tournament; Aztecs tournament and Mega International tournament in Holland to name a few.

What's next

If you wish to play league basketball, you will need to register with England Basketball. You can download the form on our Forms page and an annual registration fee of £10 is payable. This normally covers your eligibility to play and insurance for the games. The club runs a Player Kit Ownership Scheme meaning you buy the playing kit which will belong to you and you alone. However if you then wish to leave the club, we will be happy to buy the kit back off you at an agreed price provided the uniform is still in a good condition.
